Millbrook runs past Athens Drive, 79-59


Millbrook took its first lead of the game 53 seconds into the second quarter, and never trailed again as it knocked off Athens Drive 79-59 in boys basketball action.

Phillip Burwell guided the Wildcats to victory with 18 points, 10 assists, and 7 rebounds. The Jaguars were paced by DJ Robertson who scored 22 of his game-high 25 in the second half.

On the strength of six Lawrence Frost points, Athens Drive jumped out to an 11-9 lead after one stanza. Isaiah Lewis scored Millbrook’s first 6 points in the frame before dishing out an assist to Adam Carey for a late three-point basket.

Sam Hood downed a three to start the second, and the Wildcats did not look back from there. Burwell and Hood combined for 10 second quarter points as Millbrook used an 8-0 run to take a 27-16 lead into the half.

The Wildcats’ built their largest lead of the night in the third quarter. Burwell connected with Hood on back-to-back slam dunks to open the period, and William Felton pushed the lead to 23 at one point with three consecutive baskets.

Felton scored all 8 of his points in the third, and after a step-back bucket from Jai McRae, Millbrook ended the quarter with a 57-38 lead.

Robertson heated up in the game’s final minutes as the Jaguars’ late-push cut their deficit to as little as 12. The Northern Kentucky signee ended the third with a three-point basket and three-point play, then opened the fourth with two consecutive scores.

Burwell and the Wildcats proved to be too much down the stretch as they extended their lead back to 20 points, and eventually secured a 79-59 victory.

Millbrook improves its record to 9-0 with its second win in the last 72 hours. The Wildcats continue a three-game road trip on Monday night at Southeast Raleigh.

Athens Drive suffers its first loss of the season, and looks to bounce back next week with a trip to Broughton.
