The Millbrook Basketball program will embark on their first tournament of the summer when they travel to Asheboro, North Carolina to participate in the 2016 Asheboro Blue Comet Jamboree. The two day tournament takes place at Asheboro High School, and the nearby Asheboro YMCA. Millbrook will send three teams to the tournament, two at the varsity level, and one junior varsity group.
Head Coach, Scott McInnes will lead the Varsity Travel Team in Asheboro this weekend. Versus a very similar field, the Wildcats were able to go 5-1 in the event last year after dropping their first game of the jamboree by two points to then defending NCISAA State Champion, Greensboro Day. Once again, the Bengals greet Millbrook in the first game of the jamboree on Saturday afternoon at 1:00pm. Last season, Greensboro Day finished with a record of 28-5, and they were ranked #6 in the state of North Carolina via MaxPreps. The Greensboro Day game is followed with a trio of games for the Wildcats with a 2:00pm matchup against a team to be announced, a 4:00pm game vs. Ragsdale, and a 7:00pm game vs. Person County.
Day two offers one of the most intriguing, and the biggest tests for Millbrook as they open Sunday morning with an 11:00am matchup against the Langley brothers Keyshaun, Kameron, and Kobe of Southwest Guilford High School. The trio helped lead the Cowboys to a top fifteen ranking in the state of North Carolina with a 27-3 record, and an appearance in the 4A Western Regional semi-finals where they too would fall to eventual state champion, Charlotte Catholic. After playing the host school Asheboro at 2:00pm.
The Varsity #2 team will be led by assistant's Jamal Williams, and Julius McKinley. Their jamboree schedule starts on Saturday at 3:00pm when they take on Greensboro Day. At 5:00pm, the Wildcats will play High Point Central, and they follow with the nightcap at 8:00pm vs. Trinity. Sunday's schedule features a 9:00am matchup vs. Southwest Randolph, another game vs. Trinity this time at noon, and the #2 Varsity squad will conclude their jamboree at 3:00pm vs. Randleman. On the Junior Varsity side, associate head coach Chris Davis will guide the Wildcats at the Asheboro YMCA. Millbrook will face Greensboro Day on Saturday at 10:00am, followed by Southern Lee at noon, and Pinecrest at 3:00pm. The JV team will take on Asheboro at 9:00am to start Sunday's trio of games, with a noon game vs. Person, and 1:00pm game vs. Southwest Guilford to follow.
Players will be staying over in Asheboro on Saturday night so they are asked to bring a change of clothes, toiletries, socks, slides, basketball shorts, and shoes along with a small book bag if needed. Money for snacks, and meals will be required (the hotel provides free breakfast) but no amount over $30 is recommended. Any items brought by athletes is up to them to keep up with so any expensive headphones, etc. are not the coaches responsibility to look after. Buses will be departing Millbrook on Saturday at 7:45am, and they will be returning after the conclusion of each team's final game. Parents are welcome to attend the jamboree, and take their child home after his final game on Sunday afternoon but players must travel home with HIS parent if doing so. The team will be staying at the Comfort Inn on West Dixie Drive in Asheboro, NC. The jamboree games will be played at Asheboro High School (1221 S. Park Street, Asheboro, NC 27203), and the Asheboro YMCA (343 Highway 42 North, Asheboro, NC 27203).
